Went here as a 16 year old. Lots of shouty men walking around with pace sticks shouting a lot. Accommodation very basic. Lad in the next bed snored almost constantly for the entire duration. Showers cold. More shouty men came into the accommodation block every morning and shouted at everyone for even the most minor transgressions. One shouted at me and then threw my boots out of the window. Then he shouted at me some more. Then he made me do a lot of press ups … whilst shouting at me.

The next morning a different shouty man came into the block, saw the photo of my mother that I’d stuck to the inside of my locker door and said she was overly well nourished and had probably been with a lot of sailors in her life. I mean he had a point but I don’t think he should have been that rude. It’s not her fault she’s a big lass who led a promiscuous lifestyle.

Anyway I ended up passing out and went on to join the Rifles where I had a great career painting grass green, sweeping up puddles in the barracks, stagging on, battering civvies and culminating in being deployed to Afghan where I spent many hours hassling goat herders and hiding behind a garden wall.

Join the Army kids. It’ll make a real man out of you.

It's a significantly better BRTC camp than many of its >18 counterparts, and (in 2022) was run by a competent CO who cared personally about each recruit to the extent that was feasible. However, it is not without deficiencies, in scheduling, training, and welfare. Irrespective, I ultimately recommend it. You're only stuck there for ≈ 28 days.

Only got to 4 miles of entrance last Sunday - due to heavy snow - taking my nephew back. Luckily a 4x4 truck came along (who was taking his son) to same camp) and he got a lift there.

Don’t send your children there. It massively increases their risk of suicide. We were never told about this risk, we sent our son and he took his own life.

More than 50% of soldiers leave within 4 years. With very few skills and very few job opportunities. It’s not a job for life for most people, and for some it leads to death by suicide.

Went to passing out parade. Well organised. Buses were laid on to transport you to camp from car park. If your going get there early. If its a hot day be careful as no shade.

Had a wonderful day watching my son and 600 others at their passing out parade on 5.8.21.
Easy to find on the map. Plenty of parking space. An abundance of helpful young soldiers to assist you and point you in the right direction. Covid guidelines adhered to. A wonderful day and memory for all those involved.
