I am with Alliance Francaise de York for just over two years now and really enjoying my classes. Last year's lessons have been mostly online but the transition was made smooth and easy thanks to our lovely tutor Christine. Classes are a great mix, so you learn from your fellow students too and the balance of conversation, grammar, vocabulary etc is very well balanced. Great place to start or improve your French!!!

This is my first year of lessons with AFDY and, only into the second term, I'm finding that my French has improved significantly. The lessons are interesting, the homework worthwhile, and the teaching is both structured and geared towards promoting French conversation. There's no hiding in the shadows; Christine manages to challenge you to step outside your comfort zone while creating a 'safe environment' in which you learn from your mistakes. I am happily surprised by the learning opportunities made possible via Zoom - sharing work together, breaking off into small groups, watching videos... I am, however, also looking forward to meeting my group in person one day, because everyone seems so lovely and the social side to group lessons is a definite bonus!

Excellent teachers. Friendly and informative classes. Lessons this year have been on Zoom and this has worked very well. My classes have been for post beginners. Good combination of vocabulary, grammar, practical use of the language in everyday situations and role play. Opportunities to chat in French and raise any difficulties eg with homework. Good value. Would highly recommend.

I have been taking a course with AFY for the past 15 years: this amount of time shows how much I appreciate the class and my fellow students. Because it is an advanced class, we have a great variety of learning opportunities, among them listening to French radio and TV, reading newspapers and books, researching aspects of French life, studying grammar and taking dictation. In the past year, we have continued on zoom which has been more effective than I expected.

I am in my third year and I love it. So much progress with my tutor taking the whole group with her.. every class is well judged and a highlight of the week!
This is a class where you want to stretch yourself and make mistakes because you know that Christine will take them and help you all learn from them without a hint of criticism.

AFDY is a great place to learn French. It is very welcoming and the classes are very enjoyable. This year the classes have continued online and have continued to be a bright spot in the week!. I would definitely recommend the classes and all the other events and activities on offer.

I have been attending the Alliance Francaise class in York for 16 or so years(Advanced) and have been very happy with the approach, range of topics, contributions of other Francophones ( who have become friends) and of course of our teacher, Christine. I've been a member of AFDY for a few years now, and can happily recommend it. I've tried one-to-one sessions, classes and more recently Zoom sessions, and I've always found the Alliance to be welcoming and most helpful. There are plenty of other activities to get involved with too, including talks, films and more informal conversation groups.
