I recently attended a 'Paint and Pigment Workshop' at The Colour Makers House in Appleby-in-Westmorland, and it was an enlightening experience. Mark, the resident artist, shared his extensive knowledge of pigment creation, guiding me through hands-on processes of extracting colours from natural sources. Exploring the unique collection of locally sourced Cumbrian pigments was a highlight, and I was pleased to acquire several vibrant hues for my own projects. The historic 1677 townhouse, with its charming atmosphere, added to the workshop's appeal. A delightful lunch provided a chance to reflect and engage in enriching conversations.
For those seeking a tailored experience, Mark offers bespoke workshops designed to suit individual interests and skill levels. Whether you're a seasoned artist or a curious beginner, there's something to be gained from his expert guidance.

Mark generously gave his Christmas Eve to provide my partner and I the opportunity to experience his Pigment workshop.

I am by no means an artist, but must say I was completely absorbed.

An excellent workshop lead by Mark, somebody that clearly is very passionate about Colour & Pigment and conveys that passion effortlessly. The fact Mark himself is extremely easy going, friendly and a breeze to listen to makes it so easy to take it all in.

Brilliant.

Cannot recommend enough. We will be back!

Thank you Mark and Phil for a truly unique and special colour making experience today. I so enjoyed my day, I learned so much about the history, alchemy and processes involved in making pigments from local rocks and earth. Your step by step instruction was so helpful and kind encouragement to use what I'd learnt in my own art practices will spur me on. I'd highly recommend one of your workshops and visit to your shop to anyone curious about the colour around all around us. Thankyou again for a very memorable experience. I spent a day at the colour makers house in the delightful town of Appleby, doing a ‘paint and pigment workshop’. Mark is very knowledgable and passionate about his specialist subject: paint and pigments. I learnt a huge amount and really enjoyed the experience and I was able to buy some beautiful vibrant pigments to take home for making into paint. Mark has also developed a collection of pigments from Cumbria. A lovely buffet lunch was provided and Mark will do bespoke workshops to suit you. I would highly recommend this as an experience.

What an amazing place, I was just expecting to buy a few paints as I wanted to get back into acrylics. It was like a little workshop Mark was really helpful and knowledgeable and guided me through everything relevent to my art style and what would be useful to me right through to explaining the process of pigments, processing and the mediums. So interesting, they have their own paint pigments from the local stone and slate in beautiful tones with burnt tones too. Very special I could go on and on but visit and see for yourself, Visit when you have plenty of time to chat and appreciate what they do here!!! Thank you, I will be back!
