I can highly recommend Exeter BJJ. I’ve been training with the team for several years now and can confirm this is a great place to learn and take up BJJ.

The club is now well-established with some highly experienced instructors and students. The club offers a range of classes from beginner foundations to more advanced. Gi and No-Gi, most recently with additional classes covering combative BJJ and self-defense, which have proven to be a popular alternative.

The club also offers female-only classes. Over the previous year, the women’s Exeter BJJ team has really expanded, which is also headed up by experienced black belt Tanya.

It’s a nerve-wracking experience starting out, but I’ve honestly found everyone to be so helpful and supportive. The club supports people who wish to compete at a high level and those like myself who use training as a form of hobby.

Check out the clubs instagram and socials for more information, if your looking for something new or to re-start your bjj journey then I would definitely recommend 👍👌💯

Really welcoming environment and positive vibes. I’m a white belt that managed to pop in whilst visiting the area but felt looked after by everyone. Very diverse range of belts, experience and gender which is always a good sign.
Look forward to dropping in again in the future!

Exeter BJJ Academy is a truly exceptional martial arts club. From the moment you join, you’re welcomed into a supportive and inclusive community. The coaching team is fantastic—always approachable, knowledgeable, and dedicated to helping everyone, regardless of skill level, progress both technically and personally.

What sets this academy apart is that it offers more than just a place to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. It’s a community of like-minded individuals who genuinely want to see each other grow and succeed. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced, you’ll find encouragement and camaraderie at every turn.

Since joining, I’ve felt nothing but positivity, and I’m constantly inspired by the friendly atmosphere and shared passion for the sport. Exeter BJJ Academy isn’t just a club—it’s a home for anyone looking to challenge themselves, grow, and belong. Highly recommended!

After two years as a member of Exeter BJJ I would, and have happily recommended the club to friends. The club recently celebrated its 20th anniversary and that’s a testament to the dedication and commitment of the coaching staff.

Starting BJJ at any age can be daunting but this club offers a welcoming and inclusive space to train is a safe and structured style with 3 foundation sessions a week. It caters for intermediate and advanced belts with a range of gi and no gi sessions daily, along with a weekly women’s class, kids sessions and a self-defence specialty class. With a strong cohort of black belts (male and female) the club doesn’t make a big deal about broadcasting on socials about its expertise but rather favours just showing up and getting on with training.

I started in my early 30s with zero martial arts experience, it’s been an incredibly challenging, rewarding and addictive journey so far. You might come to BJJ to compete, for self defence or just to learn a new hobby, either way you’ll be struck by the sense of camaraderie and the feeling that you’ve joined a team.

Wicked club, started there nearly 2 years ago. Insane depth of knowledge, zero bravado, more black belts than you can shake a stick at. Every single member is friendly and welcoming. You can't afford not to join!

Great Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gym based in Exeter, Devon.

I have trained in a number of gyms over the years but Exeter is definitely up there as one of the best. Very high-level instruction as well as now over 10 black belts and lots more colour belts to give great advice and brilliant training partners.

Highly recommend whether you're looking to start Jiu Jitsu, are a seasoned practitioner moving to the area or just fancy dropping in on your travels - you'll always be warmly welcomed and treated very well.
