All Saints Church in Winstanstow sits on the Roman road between the city at Wroxeter and the fort at Leintwardine.
The name of the village is derived from Anglo-Saxon saint, Wigstan. Grandson of the king of Mercia, he was martyred at the location of the village by his great-uncle. Wigstan was canonised as Wystan, and the suffix stow means place.
The church was built between 1180 and 1200. It features a stunning timber roof from 1630, regilded in the 19th century. Along with the addition of box pews in the 19th century, there is some impressive stained glass.
The south transept features a large window depicting the resurrection. Jesus, in the central pane, is shown to be absolutely ripped. Clearly he spent the three days in the tomb doing nothing but sit ups. The Jesus shown here would have had no trouble carrying the cross to Golgotha.
