Visited Hordle Lakes today and despite it usually being rock bottom for fishing in late January I was blessed with very mild weather and direct warmth from sunny skies which promised a better than average day. I was met by the bailiff at the entrance, paid for my day ticket and dipped my landing net and unhooking mat, and he kindly gave me some advice on pegs.

I fished Spring Lake at the end of the complex which was a short walk from the end car park. It is picturesque and will be lovely in the summer once the trees green up and my only comment - and it isn't a negative - is that it seems to be pretty shallow at around 20-24" at least in the near corner where I was situated.

I had hoped to get into the large roach which are in the lake, but it wasn't to be although I had several in the 6-8oz mark. I also managed to land three nice bream around 1.5-2lb, two carp - a mirror of 5.5lb and a common of 4.5lb and a lovely tench at 3.5lb, as well as a haul of smaller roach which I was nervous about trying to feed off at this time of year in fear of blowing my peg.

Given the time of year, and the fact it was my first visit, I was pretty pleased and will return in the spring when the fish are more active and the tackle shop and refreshments are up and running to get a better feel for how Hordle Lakes operates during the busier months.

We decided to give hordle lakes a try as hadn't fished it for years and wanted to try and catch some veriety of fish other than carp as, while trying other venues, that's all we had caught this year. We told the man in the shop this and asked him to recommend one of the lakes. He pointed us toward canal lake as it promised us a chance to catch a lot of fish and boy did we catch a lot..of carp...lots and lots of them around 2lb to 5lb. At one point it became a literal feeding frenzy. It's a shame we didn't catch anything else, even a roach would have been nice but we still had a good day any way. Would definitely recommend trying here.

Went back to Hordle on my loansome to try one of the other lakes 'spring' to see what other species I could catch. Even though the weather was terrible I managed to catch 3 tench all around 4lb, 4 carp and a couple of good sized bream which, when hooked leapt out of the water . Great fun.

Found the lakes whilst staying at a near by campsite. Loved this one that much we returned for 3 days out of 6. We fished on long lake and spring lake.Staff were helpful and pleasant, Naomi in particular (sorry can't remember the guys name) was lovely, checked we was OK and had a lovely chat. Plenty of stunning fish, (son was in his element as caught no less than 10 1 afternoon and all in double figures) just wish we were closer to visit more often. But we will definitely be visiting again 👍

Great Lakes, well maintained and relaxing environment. Alvin is welcoming and was happy to help my son who has just started fishing. He was able to offering 1-1 tuition to get him started. I’d recommend this lake for seasoned fishers and beginners. Reasonable day rates, plenty of space and onsite toilets and small fishing tackle shop.
