Shy Lowen is made of magic. It’s a sanctuary for horses and ponies… but humans too. Primarily it’s where rescue animals can be safe, but it’s a safe haven for people too and it attracts a host of volunteers who have built confidence, experience and careers from their time there - a real community. It’s the most calming and grounding place with so much greenery and wildlife - you’d never know it’s an urban area. Bernie and the team and volunteers work so hard to care for every animal and person that steps over the threshold. It’s a delight to visit.

Shy Lowen is an amazing place. They re-home horses and ponies that need it and rescue these horses from all over the world. They dedicate so much time and effort into the local community giving young people a unique opportunity to work with and look after the animals.
Shy Lowen also run many group and private lessons giving anyone the chance to ride a horse. I have taken my daughter here for years and have nothing but praise for the people who work there and the women that run the lessons.

Very sweet place 🌼 where the staff made me feel very welcomed.

I went for a month for a volunteering period abroad (I’m from France) and those amazing memories with the members of the staff, the children, and the horses will really stay in my mind forever !

I wish I had stayed longer with you all…I truly admire what all of you do every day to make all of the residents 🐴 feel their best.

I love the fact that children can have quality time with the horses taking care of them, and benefit in return of free riding lessons ! This is a very clever way of getting them into horse riding and help a charity.

If I come back to Liverpool, I will definitely pass by to say hi !!

A special thanks to Bernie, Ben and Kate 🫶🏼

This horse and pony sanctuary is wonderful! I often see them offering pony rides for kids at all of the local community fun days, and the staff and volunteers are so patient and kind with both horses and the children wanting to meet and ride them.
They offer riding sessions, as well as programmes to help veterans and youths, and some wonderful courses, such as horse whispering.
My daughter has volunteered her time here, and loved every minute of it, as much as it is hard work, the sense of community here, and the love for the animals, make it a welcoming and lovely place to be

Shy Lowen Horse and Pony Sanctuary is a truly special place. I first came here as part of my rehab program, and the equine therapy was life-changing. The connection I found with the horses helped me rebuild trust and find purpose again. After rehab, I started volunteering, and eventually trained to become an equine therapist here.

Bernie and her team are amazing, dedicating their lives to rescuing horses and helping people heal. Shy Lowen isn’t just a sanctuary for animals—it’s a sanctuary for people too. If you’re looking for a place that makes a real difference, I highly recommend supporting Shy Lowen.

terrible. First of all they say ‘yes the cats are friendly’ as one viciously attacks my girlfriend as she was minding her own business. The horses are not cared for at all they arent cleaned clearly arent mucked out regularly they have over grown hooves must be a struggle for them to walk. if you want to run an animal business and open it to the public you should be committed to do whatever these animals need and whenever they need it, if you arent prepared for the necessities of your animals you shouldnt own them in the first place. ive also notices that the owner Bernie is extremely rude and doesnt care for the volunteers who are working there specifically for the animals and their welfare. saying that they can not ride the horses even if they pay for lessons which is honestly disgraceful she doesnt respect the people around her as shes clearly only in it for money not the animals and their needs. if i could id have this place sorted and have the animals washed, fed and cleaned out regularly as i genuinely care about my animals and if you dont have passion and care for these animals you shouldnt have them at all.
