When I signed up for ESOP's Contemporary Fine Art online course in 2024. I was in a rut. I was having creative mental block and just felt everything I was making was rubbish. The CFA course has really turned things around for me. I had no expectations in the beginning and thought I'd just see how it went but it's been a wonderful experience. Course tutors were Bob Matthews, Guy Allott and Liane Lang and all were excellent. Very observant, knowledgeable and approachable. Attending long distance from Singapore meant a 7-hour time difference for the weekly sessions (4pm to midnight for me) but I looked forward to every one. The class format has just the right balance of personal mentoring, lecture input and group interaction with fellow artists. The questions thrown at us every week were thought-provoking/mind-opening and pushed me to think more deeply about the work I make, and why I make what I make, thereby helping me better understand the kind of artist I am/want to be and what I want my art to convey. Coming together as a group is also highly beneficial as you gain from different perspectives and form a supportive network. Having experienced various formats of online teaching from other art schools, I have to say ESOP has nailed the formula. I've learnt so much in a short time and it shows in my latest work. Highly recommend!

My time as an art foundation student at ESOP was an incredibly formative and enriching experience that truly prepared me for my fine art degree. The program was deeply personal, with tutors who were not only highly skilled but also exceptionally approachable and supportive, creating a nurturing environment for artistic growth. Andrew and Alison, in particular, were like guardians throughout that time, offering guidance and encouragement that extended beyond technical training and into genuine care for our development as artists. Their dedication, coupled with the close-knit and inspiring atmosphere of ESOP, gave me the confidence and foundation I needed to thrive in my degree.
My time at ESOP was a stark contrast to my experience at university. While ESOP felt personal and intimate, with tutors offering tailored support and Andrew and Alison providing a sense of guardianship, university was vast and often overwhelming. I frequently felt like a tiny fish in a huge pond, navigating the expanse of sprawling schedules and disorganised tutor systems. The close-knit environment I had grown used to at ESOP was replaced by a sense of anonymity, making it difficult to find the same clarity and guidance. That contrast made me appreciate the structured and nurturing atmosphere of ESOP even more, as it gave me a foundation of confidence that carried me through those more chaotic university years.

I absolutely love the Essential School of Painting. I did the Saturday Painting Personal Project course, and liked it so much that I came back and did it again two years in a row. The imaginative and maverick teaching liberated me to make bigger and bolder paintings. I particularly liked the way this course enabled us to focus on our own ideas and motifs, essentially incubating our own artistic practices. I miss it already!

Really enjoyable, going through all the basics and painting from live models over the course of 8 weeks. Great for complete beginners and the more experienced. Loved it

I took a summer school intensive at ESOP with Dan Coombs and can easily say it was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had at an art school. Each day, we were given a different prompt, drawing and painting from a live figure model. Dan always challenged us to make bigger works and gave us thoughtful critical feedback. I’ve left the intensive feeling more confident working in a larger scale and learning to push through feelings of self-doubt. All the materials at the school are included for free in the fee, except for canvas which we paid for at cost. The staff are super helpful and I met some really lovely people. I highly recommend taking classes here!

The ESOP is a treasure. The Painting Year Course got me started on my painting career and continues to give me a structured environment within which I can explore ideas and techniques with the help of great tutors, who really tune into you as an individual.
The courses are great value and give you the opportunity to work alongside other painters in a positive, creative and nurturing space.

I highly recommend the Essential School of Painting. The quality of teaching both online and in-person is excellent and tutors are generous with their time and knowledge. The atmosphere is welcoming, inclusive and inspiring. Visiting tutors/artist talks are of a very high standard. The ESOP does not teach a particular style, but tackles the subject of painting equally from a practical and intellectual standpoint, most importantly rooting itself in contemporary discourse.

I have had a very positive experience at the Essential School of Painting, having completed two courses there, and seen my work develop enormously over the last 2 years. The tutors are practising artists and very committed to student learning, classes are small so there is plenty of individual teaching as well as group discussion, and the School has a very welcoming relaxed atmosphere. The teaching has really improved my technical competency in painting methods and materials, as well as a very positive impact on my confidence and creativity. It has been a very good experience as a student to be part of a community of artists on these courses, sharing ideas and experiences. I thoroughly recommend the Essential School of Painting to anyone who is looking for painting courses that are serious about helping students develop their ideas, technical skills and their creativity.
