Really tidy piece of history here. Impressive size in terms of what it was, lots of information and more importantly for us was the knowledge of the site team, we spoke to a lady in the grounds of the site who was very impressive of her knowledge of the site. Small shop with ice creams, guess who had to have one !!!

Stunning ruins of Wenlock Priory. Great lesson of history and peaceful walk around the remains once large and unique Abbey.

Wenlock Priory, located in Much Wenlock, Shropshire, England, was founded as a monastic site in the 7th century by St. Milburga, a local saint and granddaughter of King Penda of Mercia. Initially a small Anglo-Saxon convent, the site later fell into decline. In 1079, after the Norman Conquest, it was reestablished as a priory by Roger de Montgomery, a prominent Norman noble, and dedicated to St. Milburga. It was then affiliated with the Cluniac order, a branch of the Benedictines, and became known for its strict adherence to the Cluniac ideals of reform and monastic discipline.

Over the centuries, Wenlock Priory grew in wealth and influence, gaining substantial lands and resources. The priory was renowned for its impressive architecture, especially its church and cloisters, and became a center of religious and economic life in the region. However, like many monasteries in England, it was dissolved in 1540 under the orders of King Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries.

After the dissolution, the priory buildings were partially dismantled and fell into ruin, though portions were converted into a private residence. Today, Wenlock Priory is managed by English Heritage, and its surviving ruins are a popular historical site, known for their elaborate carvings and peaceful gardens.

An interesting place to visit if old buildings and priorys are your thing. Lots of information, lots to see 👀, just a shame the old house was not accessible. Good for an hour or so (esp if the weather is nice). And so peaceful and quiet.

A fascinating place to visit. There is a car park which is pay and display but free for English Heritage members. There is parking in the town starting at 60p an hour. There is a small shop and toilets on site, and you can get an audio tour, guidebook, or use the information boards. What remains of the priory gives a sense of size and scale, and the garden gives a nice touch. There is no access to the hall, which was part of the priory. Worth a visit

A lovely quiet place to reflect amongst the ruins of a historical Priory. There's not a huge amount left but still worth seeing and feeling the ambience. We're members of EH, I don't know how much it costs for non-members.

Absolutely gorgeous place. So peaceful. The history is amazing and the info available is just great. Staff are friendly and informative. The priory and surrounding area is beautiful. Make sure you visit the town centre and church. You won’t be disappointed
