The house is deeply rooted in its history as a former Benedictine priory, and this legacy profoundly shapes its atmosphere and character. It’s a place where visitors can experience a sense of stepping back in time, while simultaneously benefiting from the intellectual and cultural richness of Cambridge.

History and Heritage

Originally established as a Benedictine priory in the 15th century, Westcott House transitioned to a college of the University in 1955. This transition wasn’t merely a shift in administrative structure; it involved a conscious effort to preserve the priory’s unique spirit. The building retains many of its original features, including the striking cloisters and the intimate Chapel. These spaces are central to the house’s identity, offering a palpable connection to its monastic past. The architecture itself speaks volumes about the history of contemplation and scholarship that has unfolded within its walls.

Distinctive Features and Atmosphere

Westcott House distinguishes itself through several key features. The cloisters, a covered walkway surrounding a central courtyard, provide a peaceful space for reflection and offer a welcome respite from the weather. It’s a space designed for quiet reverence, fostering a spiritual atmosphere.

While luxurious amenities are absent, the focus is firmly on providing a comfortable and conducive environment for study and reflection. The house maintains a small library and common rooms, offering spaces for students to gather and interact. The emphasis is on fostering a close-knit community and supporting academic pursuits. Spent a quiet day here on a rather cold day. This is a unique place with its own cloisters and gardens. The Chapel is spartan with wooden bench seats and no luxury here. A place of tranquility with no frills. Would suggest anyone elderly or with related back or health problems arm themselves with adequate aids. You could imagine monks or those wanting a simple life would be quite happy to be here. For the ordinary mortal this place could be a spiritual challenge if you are spending hours meditating. The luxury of comfortable seating is a a thought that comes to mind.

We had a terrific short stay at Westcott House. It is very well-situated in town and well-run by the friendly administrators in the summer. The small grounds are luscious and make for a great view from the spacious rooms. It felt very relaxing and quiet even though we were only a few blocks from the busier part of town. Given the excellent rates especially compared to other places in Cambridge, we were surprised to see that not all the suites were occupied. Surely an advertisement campaign would do wonders, but then again maybe it's a good thing that this remains something of an undiscovered gem.

A place of great spirituality, academic study and joyful community. The college has a broad catholic tradition and is a place of inclusive and progressive theology.
